It all started in 1995.
A small advert in the local newspaper, the "East Fife Mail," caused the first ripples that led to the formation of the club. At the heart of this was Bill Black. Bill had done some commercial diving in bygone years and now enjoyed recreational diving with his son Stevie and James Lowe, a family friend.
The three decided to place the advert in anticipation of forming a club, knowing that there were likely to be other enthusiasts in the local area. Very quickly, interest began to build, with ex-forces and commercial personnel taking an active interest.
In order to gain certification, the divers undertook courses with Strathclyde Divers in Glasgow, through Angus Cowie. Very soon, the membership of the club were all licensed divers through PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors). A few other members also undertook instruction at a diving centre in Oban.
One of the earliest club dives was on a trip to Mallaig. Six of the club dived one of the lochs around Mallaig, which Mike Murray remembers as being quite exciting. Dives were arranged for most weekends around the local East Fife area. Elie, Fife Ness (Crail), Leven and Buckhaven were all popular and regular sites.
One of the highlights of the club calendar is the annual trip to Oban and a two-night stay at the Tralee Bay Caravan Park. The first venture to this beautiful part of the world was in 1996. Using Alchemy Diving as the tour guide, the group enjoyed the visit so much, it was decided to make this an annual event. However, the weekend turned out not just to be for diving. With successive years, it has turned into a real family occasion. While the divers are out on the water; wives, friends, sons and daughters enjoy a relaxing time in Oban or the surrounding area. On the Saturday evening, the group congregate for a family barbecue on the beach to reflect on the days' dives and catch up with other events of the day.
In 1998, the club broadened its horizons with a small number going to Menorca for a week's diving holiday. With the warmer waters and greater visibility, this turned out to be a fantastic week. The week was split between cave, wreck, reef and other scenicdives.
Whereas, in 1995 the club began with a small band of 5 or 6 devoted divers, the club now boasts a healthy membership of around 20 active divers. They come from all walks of life and are an equal mix of young, mature and slightly more mature! At any weekend, between 8 and 12 of these individuals can be found diving somewhere along the local coastline or from the club's own rib-boat. With regular pool sessions to practice the skills of the sport, the club continues to strongly emphasise the need for safety first.
